PCS/TTR Day

Traditionally PCS day is held in November to summarize and present all the activities and news from RNE to the community. In 2018, it was on 21st November and was combined with TTR (Timetable Redesign Program). Almost one hundred RNE members took part in the new ground-breaking PCS/TTR event.

As each year, RNE’s PCS team prepared a very rich and interesting program. After registration and a morning coffee, Philipp Koiser welcomed the participants and explained the importance of TTR for the railway sector and its impact on the planning procedures. It was obvious that this event of PCS should be combined with TTR, taking the opportunity to show the progress to the users.

As in previous years, the agenda was presented in a short video, and as always it promised a lot of interesting topics, presentations and entertainment for the day.
According to the order of the presentations, the participants were guided from the past activities and achievements to future plans. Starting with the retrospective report, Máté Bak and Jorge Campo introduced the following topics:

• Recent statistics,
• The so called “Frozen zones” development,
• GDPR
• Dwell time validation in the timetables
• Joint Sector TAF TSI Short term path request pilot
• Trainer network

As well as these minor presentations, some further topics were highlighted and presented separately. Máté Bak talked about the status of the Envelope Concept, explaining the reasons that brought the project to a delay and he informed the users that the new planned release date is in September 2019.
Anna Géczi, the new PCS Application Manager, presented the story and the status of the removal of national particularities, while summarising the current achievements of the short-term actions.
As always, to break the continuous presentations, the participants were involved some short games to test their knowledge and interest in PCS in a poll, then solving a quiz focusing on the recent presentation and finally were asked to complete a small crossword that was related to the presented information from the day.

After the lunch, the focus was moved to the IT aspect and the future. First, Mario Toma presented the project “TSI compliant PCS mandatory interface”. According to the national implementation plan almost every IM will be able to communicate with PCS via interfaces for TT2022, which would be a great success and increases the data quality in PCS. It also reduces the necessary human resources on the planners’ side to maintain PCS manually and keep it synchronized.
The rest of the event was assigned to the TTR program. Philipp Koiser, the leader of the program, presented the general idea and motivation behind TTR. To ensure a bright future, the railway sector must change to be ready for the challenges of the market. To do so, we need better harmonization in advanced and short-term planning, optimal use of our capacity, and commitment to a European process.
To check some elements of the program, some pilots are already in place:
• Rotterdam – Antwerp
• München – Verona
• Mannheim – Miranda de Ebro
• and later ÖBB with all of its main lines

Philipp Koiser talked about the organization of the pilots, after which Máté Bak presented the IT support that RNE provides to the pilots. Basically, two key elements, the Electronic Capacity Model Tool and Rolling Planning, the new process type, in PCS.
In the final presentation of the day, Mario Toma explained the foreseen structure of the TTR IT Landscape. He explained in detail the planned micro-services (capacity hub, capacity broker, train harmonization, path request management, path management, messaging, TCR) that should enable a smooth functionality of the complex TTR processes. Regarding the development plans, in the last slides of his presentation, he also showed the planned implementation timeline.
In the closure of the day, as always, the users could indicate their satisfaction with the venue, presenters, content, etc. As in previous years, the results were very positive, which highlights the need for future events.
